What Does 18k Actually Mean?

To understand Definition of 18k, we first have to look at the measuring stick: Karats (k).

• 24k Gold is 100% pure gold. It is bright orange-yellow and extremely soft (you could bend it with your fingers).

• Karat measures how many parts of the metal are pure gold out of 24 total parts.

Math of 18k:

18k Gold is made of 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts other alloys.

This means 18k gold is 75% Pure Gold and 25% Alloy Metals (like silver, copper, or zinc).

• US Standard: Stamped as 18k, 18kt, or 18K.

• European Standard: Stamped as 750 (representing 75.0% purity).

Alloy Factor: Why isn't it 100% Gold?
