Measure Your Ring Size at Home: Useful Guide, No Guesswork
There is nothing quite like the excitement of ordering a new ring—whether it’s a Moissanite engagement ring or a trendy stackable band. But that excitement can quickly turn to frustration if the ring arrives and...it doesn't fit.
At La Pretti, we want your unboxing moment to be perfect.
While visiting a local jeweler is the most accurate method, you can get a professional-level measurement right from your living room. In this guide, we’ll walk you through 3 proven methods to find your perfect fit, inspired by standards that top jewelers used worldwide.
Method 1: String & Ruler—Best for DIY
If you don't have a ring sizer, you can use common household items. This is the most popular method for a reason—it works.
What you need: A piece of non-stretchy string or a strip of paper, a pen, and a ruler (millimeter).
Follow These Steps👇
-
Wrap: Take the string or paper and wrap it around the base of the finger you intend to wear the ring on.
-
Mark: Use the pen to mark the point where the string/paper overlaps.
-
Measure: Lay the string flat and measure the length in millimeters using your ruler.
-
Convert: Use the chart below to convert your measurement into standard ring size you choose.

💡 Pro Tip: Do not pull the string too tight! The ring needs to be loose enough to slide over your knuckle but tight enough not to spin.
Method 2:🎁Secret Slueth——Best for Gifts
Planning a surprise proposal? You can't exactly ask for her finger. Instead, borrow a ring she already wears.
-
Select a ring that properly fits the intended finger (remember, the ring finger on the left hand may be smaller than the right hand).
-
Measure the Internal Diameter of the ring (do not include the metal band itself).
-
Compare this diameter to our sizing chart.
-
For Example: If the internal diameter is 16.5mm, checking out on chart, that is a US Size 6.
Method 3: Printable Ring Sizer—Most Accurate📏
For the highest accuracy without leaving the house, we recommend using a printable tool.

3 Critical Rules for a Perfect Fit
Even if you measure correctly, environmental factors can change your size. Keep these rules in mind before you click Add-to-Cart.
1. Knuckle Rule
If your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger, you need to size up. The ring needs to squeeze over the knuckle but sit snug at the base.
-
Here's Your Fix: Measure both the base of your finger and your knuckle, then pick a size in between the two.
2. Temperature Matters
Fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat or after eating salty food!
-
Here's Your Fix: Measure your finger at the end of the day when your hands are warm. This ensures the ring won't be too tight in summer.
3. Wide Bands Fit Tighter
Are you buying a chunky statement ring or a wide men's band over 4mm width?
-
Here's Your Fix: A wide band takes up more surface area and feels tighter. We recommend going up half a size (e.g., if you are a 6, order a 6.5) for wide designs.
FAQ: Common Sizing Questions
Q: What is the average ring size for women?
A: In the US, the average ring size for women is between Size 6 and Size 7. For men, the average is between Size 9 and Size 10. If you are guessing for a gift, these are the safest starting points.
Q: Can I resize a Moissanite ring later?
A: Yes! Most simple bands with Solitaire settings can be resized by a jeweler. However, Eternity Bands (rings with stones all the way around) usually cannot be resized. For eternity bands, getting the measurement right the first time is crucial.
Q: What if I am between sizes?
A: Always size up. It is much more comfortable to wear a slightly loose ring than one that cuts off circulation. Plus, a jeweler can easily add "sizing beads" to tighten a loose ring, but stretching a ring is harder.
